As King Solomon continues sharing his wisdom, he focuses much of his attention on the words and lips of the wise. Throughout the Bible, the words of someone provide testimony to what lies within her heart. When we’re filled with praise, it overflows from within us. When we’re weighed by worry, it pours from our lips. And, as Solomon points out, when we have God’s wisdom deep in our hearts, it will flow from our mouths as evidence of our faith. These gentle, life-giving words spread knowledge, making their audience joyful and healthy. This is a great responsibility and support for believers, and even more of a reason for us to study His Word and remain in community.
Verse 1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Verse 18: “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.”
Verse 33: “Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.”
